Insights and inspirations from a 6-days conference reuniting Italiana geospatial and open communities

From June 12 to June 17, our research group had the privilege of participating in GEODaysIT, an exceptional conference held in Bari. Bringing together approximately 300 attendees, this event centered around geospatial data, open source technologies, and the fascinating world of open data. GEODaysIT provided a platform for interactive discussions through oral presentations, engaging poster exhibitions, and valuable networking opportunities. We were thrilled to contribute to this remarkable conference, which served as a hub for experts and enthusiasts in the field in the Italian context.

The event, which brought together AIT (Associazione Italiana Telerilevamento), FOSS4G-IT and OSM-it in a single week, was an interesting opportunity to share with colleagues from academia and industry the latest progress in our project on bridge inspections supported by open source tools.

Our member and collaborator, Federica Gaspari and Rebecca Fascia participated to GEODaysIT as speakers for the project โ€œPotree platform for infrastructure inspection project: an open-source WebGL solution to support the survey and defect analysis of bridges and viaductsโ€. They presented the latest progress and results of our bridge inspection research, sharing insights on the use of Potree WebGL and open-source to support infrastructure inspection procedures and decision making. The case studies presented are in collaboration with the provinces of Piacenza and Brescia.

This conference was very constructive as we shared new experiences of using free and open source data and software to process geographic information, creating opportunities for professional users, public administration users, developers and producers of geographic data to compare and share knowledge. We are looking forward to next year’s edition to meet the Italian community again in another beautiful city like Bari!
